Meiji Jingu Shrine is a Shinto Shrine located in Shibuya City, Tokyo prefecture. Meiji Jingu was established in 1920 to enshrine Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken, who laid the foundation for Japan’s modernization. Meiji Jingu is one of the most famous shrines in not only Tokyo but Japan as a whole due to its location and surrounding attractions.
Meiji Jingu Shrine is very large and features lush greenery. I visited the shrine from Yoyogi Station and entered via the north approach (Kita-sando). The approach takes about 15-20 minutes to walk fully and is very beautiful with lots of large trees and wildlife. The main portion of the shrine is located on the right side about halfway down the approach. The main torii gate leads you into the main shrine complex where the worship building, shrine office, and various entrance gates are located.
Meiji Jingu Shrine is very popular with tourists and foreigners and a great shrine to visit if you are in the Shibuya area. Though it is much bigger than other shrines, Meiji Jingu Shrine is very tourist-friendly with most, if not all, information in English alongside Japanese.
